By By Jared Hines Contributing Writer 02/01/2018, 6:30am CST

Everything was going the Royals’ way early in the team’s 4-1 loss to the Moorhead Spuds on Jan. 27 at Moorhead Sports Center.

Five minutes into the game, Ryan Streeter set up Trey Frederickson for his sixth goal of the season, putting the Royals up 1-0 against their section 8AA opponent. The lead didn’t last long though, as Kyler Kleven tied the game up late in the first period.

Periods two and three went in favor of the Spuds as the home team added one goal in the second period to take the lead and two more in the third for insurance. Nathaniel Johnston made 51 saves in the game, but the Royals couldn’t produce anymore offense than the lone goal, dropping to 6-15 on the season. The Royals’ next game is on Feb. 3 at Cambridge-Isanti (4-16).

After two straight wins against Cambridge-Isanti and Princeton, the Royals were ready for the Buffalo Bison when they arrived at Rogers Activity Center on Jan. 18.

One of the Royals’ biggest rivals, the Bison always plays tough against an aggressive Royals team. This time, Rogers was just too strong for the Bison, winning 5-3.

The game started with an Aaron Schmidt goal just 2:33 into the game. While the Royals took the early lead, the Bison got the last laugh in period No. 1 with Joe McNamara and Tyler Marr putting Buffalo on the board. The Bison took the 2-1 lead heading into intermission.

The second period was controlled by the Royals, with Mitchell Becker scoring a goal early to tie the score and Justin Grudem adding a shorthanded goal 11:31 into the period to give the Royals a 3-2 lead. An insurance goal was added by Frederickson 8:02 into the third period and Grudem added an empty netter late, securing victory No. 6 for the Royals in the 2017-18 season.

Rogers’ next two games weren’t so easy as the team lost to Chisago Lakes and North Branch, both by a 3-2 score. Becker and Dylan Timm scored for the Royals in the loss against the Vikings on Jan. 23. Frederickson and Grudem lead the Royals in scoring with 11 points each, while Jake Jenson and Timm are both at 10 points on the season.

The Royals’ next test is against section rival Moorhead. The Spuds are 14-6 this season, looking to make it back to the state tournament in March, representing Section 8AA. The puck is set to drop at 6 p.m.
