Girls Head Coach
The Rogers girls hockey season ended with a 1-0 loss to Anoka on Wednesday evening in the Section 5AA tournament at Roseville Arena.
The Royals, who finished 5-15-6, had beaten Anoka 4-3 in the regular season finale, then drew the same team for the play-in game at sectionals as they were seeded eighth and ninth.
Haley Miller scored in the second period for Anoka (8-13-5) and Hailey Huspak made 19 saves for the shutout. Rogers goal Emily Anderson had 23 saves.
The Rogers Royals closed the regular season with a 4-3 upset of the Anoka Tornadoes on Thursday evening.
“A very big win for us,” said coach Joel Weseloh. “Certainly the best game we have played all year. It has been really fun as a coach to watch this team improve so much over the course of the season.”
Anoka is 7-13-4 but plays in a strong conference and is good enough to split two games with an 18-5 Elk River team this year. Rogers will take 5-14-6 record into Section 5AA on Wednesday in Roseville. Wesloh said there’s a good chance Anoka will be its first-round opponent.
The Royals led 4-1 going into the third period with Paetyn Levis delivering two goals and assisting on the other two, by Courtney Johnston and Madi Chapman. Levis, a freshman, has 26 goals and 10 assists.
Emily Bjorgan made 27 saves for the Royals.
Anoka made a late rush as Sierra Maka scored with 4:58 left and Gabby Horsch notched her second goal of the game, on a power play, with 2:12 left.
It was Senior Night for the Royals, who have only one senior, Katie Feilen.
